Organic Production
What does controlled ecological cultivation mean?

Ecologically cultivated food products are produced in an
environmentallyfriendly way. Organic products are produced
in compliance with European Directive EEC 2092/91
(organic production of foodstuffs). The basic principles are
integrated production processes without the use of easily
solublemineral fertilizers and chemical-synthetic pesticides.

From January 1997, it has been mandatory for all organic products to provide the name and code number
of the local control office. These data are always available to you if requested. At least 95% of the ingredients of processed organic food products have to be organically produced. If the level of organically produced ingredients is between 70 – 95 %, the products may still be labelled "Bio" or "Eco". However,
the product description must clearly indicate the level of organic content.

All plant products complying with the regulation on organic foodstuffs are permitted to bear designation
such as "biological" or "organic". Combined phrases are also permitted, such as "controlled ecological cultivation".

Controlled cultivation is no indication of organic production, because it is up to producers and buyers to define the criteria for production and control – generally integrated crop management.

In integrated crop management systems, fertilization is applied according to the plants' requirements –
with the use of non-chemical procedures preferred.
